Entitlement.
The feeling or belief that you deserve to be given something (such as special privileges). [Merriam-Webster]
Based in concepts of social equality or enfranchisement. [Wikipedia]
It’s incredible what people believe they are entitled to these days.
I know it’s been a long time coming, and you can’t really blame anyone thing on what has caused people to believe they are entitled to something when they have not worked for nor earned it.
Those who decide to defy their superiors, their managers, or anyone who supersedes their authority, they take it upon themselves the negative consequences – even if they are simply repercussion.
They may try to explain away their behavior, but they are the ones that create the environment around them.
When you create the world around you, you are responsible for how you respond to the stimuli around you. For example, should you decide to be on your phone when you are supposed to be at work, you will suffer the consequences if you are caught.
And if you’re not caught? Keep in mind you’re being paid to do a particular job – not goof off.
Is it important? Then ask your boss if you can take the time to write that text message or make that two minute call.
Some people say it is better to beg forgiveness than to ask permission. But at what cost?
This way of thinking will only bring you suffering. It may allow you to find some sliver of happiness in whatever it is you decide to bend rules for, but in both a job as well as in a business – if you do not follow the rules, negative consequences will follow.
It may not be today.
It may not be tomorrow.
It may not even be while you are in your current position.
I am a firm believer in karma, or what goes around comes around.
The same goes for being in business.
As an entrepreneur, you have no one to blame but yourself for not taking action and following in the footsteps of those who came before you.
Joined a home business but it didn’t work for you?
You can only blame yourself.
If it was illegal, the company wouldn’t have been around for more than a couple years. And if it didn’t work, no one would be successful.
People can find an excuse for anything! Only people of integrity & fortitude take responsibility for their actions instead of blaming others.
It’s easy to blame your boss for firing you. But let me ask you this …
Were you doing the job you signed up for?
Were you following the rules?
Did you ever do anything that didn’t feel quite right?
While these may be rhetorical questions, I’m sure you can see where this is going.
Now sometimes yes – some people are let go for the wrong reasons. But instead of taking offense to being fired, take it as a learning experience.
I promise – no one is out to get you. And if you really felt that way while working there?
Why did you stay so long?
If you must have a job, find one you enjoy doing. Be sure it doesn’t suck the life out of you. Because if it does?
If you’re not excited to go to work every day? You won’t give 110% of you’re best effort.
If you’re an entrepreneur? You’ve got no one to blame but you my friend.
And if you’re lost? Find a mentor or accountability partner.
