Former President Jimmy Carter, who has been to over 145 countries and has met people from all over, speaks from his experience that the #1 abuse of human rights on earth is the abuse of women and girls.
Now, I may be partial being a woman myself, however hearing this from such a distinguished gentleman who has traveled the world over and been privy to some of the best (and worst) times in life, I knew I had to watch and learn.
He mentions that iconic holy books have often been misinterpreted by men.
What? Say it ain’t so, Jim!
In 2000, he said that a Baptist convention decided to place women in a secondary position or subservient position to men. How did they do that? By issuing an edict that prevents women from being:
– a priest
– pastors
– deacons of the church
– chaplains in the military
And in the southern Baptist seminary, if she teaches in a classroom she cannot teach if a boy is in the room!
Sexist much?
But it turns out that it might not necessarily be sexist – just a misinterpretation of what men feel is written in Scripture.
So Mr Carter says that the abuse stems from two things:
1 – the misinterpretation of holy scriptures as stated above where men have the mistaken idea that women are not equal to men and therefore do not deserve the same treatment or equal pay
2 – excessive resort to violence, which is increasing tremendously around the world
Now, there is a third but you have to watch the video to find that one out. 😉
Mr Carter touched on prison statistics and how poor people are targeted, or rather when he was President 1 in 1,000 people were imprisoned, where as these days it’s 7.3 people per thousand. Cause statistics!
Something else I learned was that the United States of America is the only developed country with a death penalty. o_O
He also spoke on:
– genital mutilation and how it is running rampant in certain countries
– honor killings (where they execute a girl who is raped, marries someone who is not approved of, etc)
– slavery or human trafficking (yes – this still goes on today)
– prostitution (and how Sweden is fighting it & who is following in their steps)
– sexual assaults in the military & how rapists are not being persecuted
– difference in pay between men and women
One statistic I heard was that really struck me was that 1 out of 4 girls who enter college will be sexually assaulted before they graduate, and how rapists are not persecuted on campus!
This is truly an amazing video that everyone should watch, so I have provided it for you today.
