I absolutely love saving money and helping others do the same. This post is about something that is CHEAP to do and is super healthy for your teeth, gums, and breath!
I’ve heard of oil pulling before. Although this blog post from a one time less-than-a-week trial user asked a doctor who said that no scientific trials have been done for testing, the people that I know who have done it and the users who are raving about it online say it’s the sheez-nit.
Oil pulling is an ancient (i.e. folk remedy) detoxification practice that involves swishing oil around in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. The benefits claimed for doing this are (but are not limited to):
- whitens teeth
- pulls toxins
- reduce the amount of harmful bacteria
- reduce dental plaque
- remineralize your teeth
- help with gum issues
- strengthen your gums
You can give your teeth an extra boost by oil pulling with essential oils! Again – I’m not an expert on these just yet, so I would refer to someone who knows just which ones to use. But the original blog post I found that provides the information to make these coconut oil bites provides some suggestions to add to your coconut oil bites (see below).
When you swish oil around in your mouth, plaque get stuck to the oil and supposedly dissolves in the liquid oil. So you are removing a lot of bacteria, which is found in plague and leads to all kinds of oral health problems, every time you oil pull.
The writer of this blog post said that the doctor she spoke with said that coconut oil does make a great substitute for mouthwash as it:
- contains Vitamin E (an antioxidant)
- has anti-bacterial properties
- has anti-fungal properties
- contains lots of easily digestible, fat-soluable vitamins like A (good for immune system), D (good for bones), and K (good for blood)
Now keep in mind that you do NOT want to swallow after you have oil pulled, because if it truly does take toxins out of your gums, teeth and whatnot then by swallowing you’re ingesting that nasty!
Also – some people may be allergic to coconut oil, so be sure to test it out somewhere else on your body – you don’t want dermatitis in your mouth!
What Oil to Use:
Traditionally, sesame seed or sunflower oil was used among the early oil-pullers, however I’m sure once I do this for me I’ll prefer coconut oil because it has so many health benefits. You can use any oil that you like, just stay away from canola or vegetable oil.
Adding Essential Oils to Your Oil Pulling Regime:
Adding in therapeutic-grade, 100% pure, essential oils into your oil pulling regime is a great way to give your health a supercharge! Only use therapeutic-grade essential oils like doTERRA or Young Life. These oils are safe to use as a dietary supplement (internally) and since you are swishing them around in your mouth, you need to use the safest.
What Essential Oils to Use:
- BAD BREATH – add 2 drops of Peppermint essential oil.
- TOOTHACHE – Add 2 drops of Clove essential oil.
- CANKER SORES – Add 2 drops of Basil essential oil.
- GUM DISEASE – Add 2 drops of Melaleuca essential oil.
- RECEDING GUMS – Add 2 drops of Myrrh essential oil.
- CAVITIES – Add 2 drops of OnGuard™ essential oil [which is the onTERRA proprietary combination of Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils].
- INFECTION IN THE MOUTH – Add 2 drops of Clove essential oil.
Coconut Oil Bites for Oil Pulling:
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup of coconut oil (you will have a little amount left over)
- 24-48 drops of therapeutic grade essential oil (see recommendations above)
DIRECTIONS:
- Melt the coconut oil.
- Pour into silicone mold (I like this one. It is .3 ounce which is nearly a tablespoon…perfect amount to swish around whereas a regular ice tray might be too big).
- Add 1-2 drops of essential oil to each individual mold.
- Stick in the fridge to harden.
- Once hard, pop out of the silicone mold and store on the counter or fridge. If you live in a warmer climate, you will want to keep it in the fridge.
- Happy oil pulling!
Additional Tips:
- Be gentle – no need to be as aggressive as with regular mouthwash. You’re swishing for 15-20 minutes, so you don’t want to wear out your jaw!
- The oil will almost double in size as it draws in saliva and (supposedly) toxins
- DO NOT SWALLOW! Once time is up, spit into trash (now down your drain where it might block your pipes).
- Once done & have spat the oil into your trash, swish with warm salt water to get any lasting residue, then brush & floss like normal!
