Make Your Own Cleaning Supplies
I first heard about this from a very good friend of mine with 3 phenomenal daughters! She makes her own, and I’m not sure how she does it, so here’s a link to one opinion on the matter…
Get Rid of Unnecessary Subscriptions
Biggest culprits are often online media, cable bills or magazine subscriptions.
Make The Most of Grocery Shopping
DO NOT go shopping for food WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY!!! Make an airtight grocery list of what you need, so you don’t purchase anything unnecessary. And when you’re not getting food …
Buy necessities in bulk like frozen food, toilet paper and baking items.
Take Cheaper Vacations
Make your own meals and snacks instead of ordering out when you’re on vacation. Look into alternative vacations that can cut down on cost, such as camping instead of a hotel, or find places like Groupon or my travel club. I actually use both because they work with each other … SYNERGY baby!
Combine Your Finances
Do not combine ALL of your finances! But if you’re sharing expenses, have a joint account you both put money in to in order to pay mutual bills and set it up so that you both have to agree on when money is taken out. This will ensure that not only are you paying your bills, but you also have your own money to do with what you need personally.
Have Frequent Discussions About Your Goals
By gauging what you want to have, you can adjust plans as needed. If you need help setting goals, here’s a post I did about that.
Adjust Your Insurance Policy
In 2013, bankruptcy was declared by 1.7 million people due to medical debt alone. You can help yourself by adjusting your plan so it’s more affordable, yet still keeps you covered.
If You Have a Credit Card, DON’T Use It
You would think it would stand to reason that if you’re trying to save money, you’ll only spend when you need to. But even if you’re “only using it but you’ll pay it off right away” … you’re only going to dig your hole deeper. Use cash, keep a daily eye on your bank account, and/or come up with a budget! Just don’t use that credit card!
Make a Debt Plan
By assessing your debts together, you can get out of debt quicker by determining the best repayment plan and reduce expensive interest.
Refinance Your Student Loans
College isn’t cheap – unless you got a full ride. Most people don’t. So if you both have student debt, try to consolidate it.
Successful people have successful habits. They have teams of people helping them stay focused and on track.
If you’re looking for a team that will do the same for you, I wanted to give you some additional information about one of mine. See the “Wealth is a Team Building Sport” below. 🙂

I would add making a written budget and using mostly cash envelopes. Dave Ramsey has some great information on the topic.

Great tip! I have mentioned that before in a previous post, but that is something couples should DEFINITELY do, because sometimes you just don’t think about what you spend as a couple. Thanks for the feedback, Rachel!

Thanks you made really good points. I don’t know how many times I go to grocery shop hungry because I go after church hahha. Making cleaning supplies is a new for me but interesting. I adore Pinterest because I have tons of refurbishing and palette furniture I will be making and it will look new. My hubby and I are very creative so we tend to like making all of our things.

That’s wonderful, Tanya! Thanks so much for the feedback. I’ll keep what you’ve said in mind for future posts, as I’m sure a lot of people have similar interests … That and I should know myself! LOL! And Pinterest is a wonderful tool for such information.

Consolidating my loans is one I have actually thought of for a moment in time, but never went further into or thought more about. You just gave me the light bulb. I need to do that because it would help a lot with our personal finances at the moment without having to defer anything. Thanks for the help!
